From smaller, socially distanced gatherings, to a greater emphasis on gratitude, togetherness and meaningful traditions, the holidays are looking a little bit different in 2020. Hosting your own downsized celebration and need some inspiration on how to make it extra special? Kristyn K. Levy of K. Kerkorian Weddings & Events shares her top tips for holiday hosting and how to make your small event feel like a full-scale celebration.
“Meaningful celebrations are not defined by numbers. Tradition must be preserved, now more than ever. Embracing change, adjusting to our current reality and chasing light in a world that feels dark is so important to make the holidays bright."
- Kristyn K. Levy
What are your favorite holiday decorating trends & themes?
My personal favorite is a long lush garland, packed with red berries and poinsettia. Drawing on natural landscapes and picking up on the colors around you can enhance the beauty of your dining room. You can also never go wrong with statement pieces!
And don't forget about the kids table! It’s always important to incorporate some sort of arts & crafts or hands-on project for the littles to make their setting feel special!
What tips do you have for client & homeowners who are entertaining at their house, especially those who are hosting a smaller crowd?
Now, is the time to go big with your decorating your table! While we are limited with the size of gatherings and many will be enjoying the holidays at home with immediate household members, filling your table with love and family heirlooms to remember those closest is so important. Bring out the fine china, set the sterling silver stored in the base of your breakfront that is rarely used, get fancy with napkin rings! Support local business by ordering festive floral centerpieces to brighten the table, work with a local calligrapher on place cards for individual settings and don’t be afraid to request a fun music playlist from an entertainment specialist. Incorporating all the “bells and whistles” of a full-scale holiday will preserve just a glimmer of joy at family gatherings that will undeniably feel different this year.
Beyond the aesthetics, plan a meaningful activity to share joy! Have each family member create a gratitude list to be shared at the dinner table as a reminder of our blessings and to celebrate love.
